Why choose a tummy tuck?

Many of our patients tell us that they feel self-conscious about the stubborn fat, lax muscles, and loose skin on their abdomen. The size and shape of the abdomen can make it difficult to choose stylish clothes that fit properly, and a large abdomen can be difficult to hide, making sufferers reluctant to take regular exercise.

These changes can be caused by age, a sedentary lifestyle, weight gain, or significant weight loss, and natural aging. Many women consult us after pregnancy has left them with sagging skin and separated abdominal muscles, which can be difficult to resolve without surgical intervention.

A standard abdominoplasty will address all these issues as it involves:

  • restoring a firmer abdomen by tightening abdominal muscles, which can also result in improved posture
  • the removal of excess skin and fat to improve abdominal contour
  • smoothing away the skin creases and bumps that harbour bacteria and cause skin irritation
  • reducing the appearance of stretch marks

You can book a consultation with a consultant plastic surgeon to discuss a tummy tuck here.

Am I a good candidate for a tummy tuck?

The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck procedure is someone who has stubborn fat, loose skin, and lax muscles in the abdomen despite maintaining a stable weight and following a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise.

All our plastic surgery patients have a thorough consultation with one of our consultant plastic surgeons to determine whether a tummy tuck is the best way to achieve their desired outcome.

We will also take a full medical history to ensure that you are physically fit enough for surgery and to ensure a smooth recovery period.

Is a tummy tuck a weight loss procedure?

Your tummy tuck will give you a smoother and more contoured abdomen, but even with liposuction, it should not be considered a weight loss procedure.

After a tummy tuck, your clothes will fit you better, and you will feel happier about your abdomen, but you should not expect to lose a significant amount of weight.

What does an abdominoplasty involve?

Your consultant plastic surgeon will make a horizontal incision in the pubic hairline and below the bikini line.

This incision will be used to access the deep layers of fat and muscle. The abdominal muscles will be tightened, excess fat removed, and the tissues remodeled to produce smoother, flatter contours. The remaining skin will be trimmed away, and the incisions closed with sutures.

The procedure will take between 2 to 4 hours and will be performed under general anesthetic.

You may wake up with temporary drainage tubes in your lower abdomen to remove unwanted fluid if required, but these will be removed as soon as possible.

How much recovery time will I need after tummy tuck surgery?

You can expect your abdominal area to be swollen, tight, and tender immediately after your tummy tuck, and you will be given pain relief to manage your discomfort. These issues will resolve over the following weeks, and your healing will be carefully monitored by the team at your follow-up appointments at the Stirling clinic near Edinburgh.

Most patients take 2 to 4 weeks off work, and your total recovery may take months. You should avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting until your consultant plastic surgeon advises you that your wound is sufficiently healed.

We advise our Edinburgh patients to wear a compression garment for between 6 and 8 weeks after surgery to support the tissues and abdominal muscles as they heal. You will have a horizontal scar on your lower abdomen, but this will soon fade.

Are there any risks with this cosmetic procedure?

Like all surgical procedures, the tummy tuck carries the risk of infection, excessive bleeding, bruising and adverse reactions to general anaesthesia.

However, most post-operative issues can be avoided with proper wound care and vigilant nursing. The excellent patient care you receive from the medical team at our Stirling clinic near Edinburgh will ensure that risks are minimized and any issues are addressed quickly before they become problems.

Is a tummy tuck permanent?

The benefits of a tummy tuck are long-lasting for patients who eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly to keep their bodies in good condition.

However, weight gain and the effects of aging may reduce muscle tone and lead to excess fat accumulation over time.

Can I combine any other cosmetic procedures with my tummy tuck?

Many of our Edinburgh patients choose to enhance their tummy tuck results even further by having supplementary procedures, including:

Liposuction

Combining your tummy tuck surgery with liposuction to remove excess fat allows us to sculpt the waistline even further.

Skin rejuvenation

Morpheus 8 is a skin rejuvenation treatment that tightens and smooths the skin, transforming the quality and appearance of your newly contoured abdominal area.
