Cosmetic Surgery: What To Expect From A Surgical Consultation
If someone is considering plastic surgery, the process usually begins with a consultation lasting 30–45 minutes. We discuss the patient’s needs and goals, examine the relevant area, take a medical history, and discuss whether their expectations are appropriate.
If they are, we can talk about treatment options. If not, we create a plan that meets their aesthetic concerns safely.
We also discuss follow-up and recovery in detail. After the consultation, patients receive a detailed letter summarising everything. They’re offered a second consultation free of charge if they want to return with further questions.
It’s really important that both the patient and I agree on the plan before we proceed — it’s a joint venture.
There is a mandatory two-week cooling-off period, but patients should take as long as they need. Particularly with facial surgery, you must be sure you’re in the right place, with the right surgeon, and the right team. I believe we offer that at FrownDocs, but patients should feel fully confident before moving forward.
There are no bad questions to ask during a surgical consultation. It’s important patients feel relaxed enough to ask anything on their mind.
What matters most is that they can clearly explain what concerns them aesthetically so we can form a treatment plan that addresses those concerns safely. Even if they don’t know technical terms, we can work with whatever language they use.
Useful questions to ask include:
• How many times have you done this procedure?
• What results can I expect?
• What is the downtime?
• How might this affect work or upcoming events?
Timing matters because the best results require following post-operative instructions. If someone has obligations that prevent proper recovery, we must plan accordingly.
I always encourage patients to ask anything they need. Many find it helpful to bring a list so they don’t forget questions in conversation — because we often end up chatting about holidays, pets, and families and forget the original point!
